The pioneers who came to Eretz Yisrael from Europe at the end of the 19th century were not Hebrew speakers or composers, so many of their earliest songs combined folk melodies with the Yiddish language of their youth. Once in Palestine, and especially with the rebirth of Hebrew as the national language, these songs were transformed with new Hebrew texts. Since the grammar and syntax of Hebrew and Yiddish are very different from each other, often the new song lyrics were only a rough approximation of the original poetry. The Yiddish version of this song said “I am a pioneer from Poland. I wear pants with a patch, shoes without soles.” In any language, this song captures the spirit of the pioneers, and their disregard for their material needs in the face of their excitement at building their Zionist dream.
