Song: Meyn Shtetle Belz

Contribution to: Israel Cancer Research Fund

Mayn Shtetele Belz, with lyrics by Jacob Jacobs (1892-1972) and music by Alexander Olshanetsky (1892-1946) was written for Dem Khazn’s Zun, (The Cantor’s Son), a 1937 film that marked the screen debut of Moishe Oysher (1907-1958). In the movie, Oysher’s character, Sol, has left his hometown in Poland to seek fame and fortune in America. Successful beyond his wildest dreams, he returns home to surprise his parents on their 50th wedding anniversary; as he approaches the familiar village, he rhapsodizes about the fond memories he has of his childhood home.
