Pioneers For A Cure / Joodayoh sprung into action when the big storm hit home and so many of us found ourselves without power, water or heat. Our attentions turned to elderly home-bound seniors in projects on NY’s Lower East Side. We enlisted our best stair-climbers like Rachel Orbach & Julia Goldstein, armed them with flashlights, hot kosher meals (thanks to Josh Schwartz at Kosher Deluxe) and names from our contacts at the UJA (thanks to Ellen Zimmerman) and we made a difference for more than 100 seniors, many who cried when receiving their first hot meal in a week. Special thanks to Laura Rosen Puzio and her uncle Ronnie for accompanying Rachel up and down dark stairwells making deliveries to the neighborhoods most needy. Can’t forget Mike Goldstein, MD – a longtime PFAC supporter and a world class bee-bop guitarist himself – who helped deliver 30 hot meals to the Steward Street projects, Lexington Ave Senior Residence as well as the Pitt Street / Houston Street intersection where FEMA was organizing their assistance efforts. Big-ups to Cathy Byrne at the Five Towns JCC who helped organize the pickup and delivery of 40 hot glatt kosher meals for shabbat today to their enclave of elderly Holocaust survivors, many who have been displaced since the storm began. So much more needs to be done and whether we are fighting cancer with music or bringing hot meals to the needy, we ask that you continue to support Pioneers For A Cure today. Thank you!
